How to Make a Chic Hair Accessory Sewing Tutorial for Girls
Learn how to make an adorably "Chic Hair Accessory" to go with any hair style you choose in this step-by-step sewing tutorial for girls ages 6 & up. This is a perfect hand-sewing project idea for beginners taken from my 6-week "Glamour Girls" Sewing Course.
Why I chose this project to be the first in my Glamour Girls course?
When thinking about projects to add to this beginning sewing course for girls (ages 6 & up) I thought about what would be an easy project. I wanted something that wouldn’t overwhelm a brand new student (or her mom).
I also wanted it to be quick to make and not too expensive. That way a new Sewing Fashionista would have a sense of accomplishment right away and want to keep going and mom wouldn’t break the bank with her daughter trying out her first sewing project.
I decided on this simple hand sewn hair accessory that, on video, I show how to make in 6 minutes. It walks through the steps of hand sewing the elastic, then the flower and finally the button. So, this project gives multiple exposures to hand sewing which is key to learning any new skill.
I was going to name it Shabby Chic Headband because the flowers I recommend using to create this project are called Shabby Chic Roses. But, I decided that since we had another headband project that would be in this course this would need a different name. So, it was named the Chic Hair accessory which still totally worked.
The fun variations students can come up with for this project!
You never know what you will find at the fabric or craft store, so this is your chance to get creative. As you can see students had a lot of fun choosing out trims, flowers, and accents to make their Chic Hair Accessory. Each headband can come out completely different and unique.
There are so many variations such as the print on the elastic, or the type of flower with some of them being big and some small. Also girls may choose to use a crystal button like I did in my video, or any button that they want. It’s really up to each girl, what she likes and wants to create. This headband can even be made with a floral applique and lace elastic.
Now it’s your daughter’s turn to make a Chic Hair Accessory!
Do you have a daughter that wants to learn how to sew? Then this is the perfect hand-sewing project to start with. She can make one in 15 to 30 minutes and for less than $5. It is a great way to do something together for a little Mother-Daughter bonding time.
And if she enjoys making them she could even make them for friends because they make great gifts for girls of all ages. She may even want to start a little business! I actually talk about that in my “My First Sewing Biz” which is included as a bonus with my “Glamour Girls” & "Sweet & Sassy" course package.
